I give it a clip
The first clip from I Give It A Year has just been released. It's a simple parlor game but...
I Give It A Year is the hilarious new comedy from Working Title Films, the producers of Notting Hill and Bridget Jones’s Diary, and the writer of Borat.
Starting where other romantic comedies finish, I GIVE IT A YEAR lifts the veil on the realities of the first year of marriage, and stars Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids), Rafe Spall (One Day), Anna Faris (The Dictator) and Simon Baker (The Mentalist).
Since they met at a party, ambitious high-flyer Nat (Byrne) and struggling novelist Josh (Spall) have been deliriously happy despite their differences. Josh is a thinker, Nat’s a doer..but the spark between them is undeniable.
Their wedding is a dream come true, but family, friends and even the minister who marries them aren’t convinced that they can last. Josh’s ex-girlfriend, Chloe (Faris), and Nat’s handsome American client Guy (Baker), could offer attractive alternatives.
With their first anniversary approaching, neither wants to be the first to give up, but will they make it?
I Give it a Year is released in cinemas on 8th February 2013.

Top Ten Documentaries of 2012
People assume that most films are crafted in a filmmaker’s mind, taking a script, translating it to screen and entertaining audiences the world round in that order; however, the documentary provides an honest insight into a subject that has actually occurred in our world, not the world created by the filmmaker.
Searching for Sugar Man, which hits DVD and Blu-ray on 27 December, shows that documentaries can be just as mysterious as crime thrillers; re-counting the story of a 70s rock icon who has long-since faded into oblivion, the film is just one of a many documentaries this year that have dabbled with the element of mystery and played with the conventional formula - making 2012 a pioneering year for the documentary. Here is a list marking the best of the bunch.
Searching for Sugar Man
A mysterious, informative and riveting documentary about two South Africans who embark on a quest to discover the truth behind their one-time hero, Sixto Rodriguez. Whether a music lover or a documentary fan, Searching for Sugar Man works better if you don’t do a Google search beforehand. You will reap the rewards of this amazing documentary from Malik Bendjelloul.
The Imposter
Like many of this year’s documentaries, The Imposter is best seen not knowing too much about what you are viewing. A Texan boy is found in Spain three years after he went missing, but it soon becomes clear that is all not as straightforward - Bart Layton’s documentary spectacularly confounds all expectation when it is flipped on its head not even 15 minutes in. Your eyes won’t leave the screen for its 100-minute running time.
The Queen of Versailles
The Queen of Versailles has been touted the best doc of the year by many, pitting on-screen the livelihood of a billionaire couple who begin construction on a mansion inspired by a palace in the French region of Versailles. As they fall victim to the economic crisis in the following few years, it is mesmerizing to witness how these people deal with the fallout of their actions.
5 Broken Cameras
A Palestinian farmer provides resistance against the Israeli army in a handheld-footage documentary that has no tricks or gimmicks up its sleeve, but provides emotion in its unflinching manner. The village in which the farmer resides in provide a snapshot of areas in Israel that are resisting the violence and war that surrounds them.
Room 237
Rodney Ascher has had praise heaped upon his documentary which analyses theories of Stanley Kubrick’s classic The Shining – as formulated by five obsessives. With the film split down theory-by-theory, the film ranges from the zany to the zanier as you witness professionals spouting dialogue about Kubrick’s impossible framing and his involvement in faking the moon landing. If you’re a fan of the Stephen King adaptation, there is no doubt you will lap this cult up.
Central Park Five
In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers were convicted of raping a white woman in Central Park – only for a serial rapist confessing to the crime many years later. The film questions the American legal system in an astonishing way, tackling the subject of racial injustice; something that has pulled directors Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon into their own legal battle. Captivating.
The House I Live In
Eugene Jarecki, the brother of Capturing the Friedmans director Andrew, crafted this insightful critique of America’s trouble with drugs as he tracks the individuals working within the judicial system - and the ones behind bars who are dragged unwittingly into the war. Like a cousin of Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic, the documentary shows how this system could potentially worsen matters, with the fight to clamp down on drugs spiralling out of control with every new day.
This Is Not a Film
When Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi was placed under house arrest for allegedly conspiracising against national security, he took to filming the events he was subjected to using an iPhone and a digital camera; top marks for bravery. With these devices used in a completely non-gimmicky way, This Is Not a Film is an, erm, extraordinary film. Smuggled out of Iran (allegedly in a cake) and backed by top Hollywood directors, this is a must-see.
Chasing Ice
Critical-acclaim has been received for Chasing Ice - mainly due to the fact that it follows National Geographic photographer James Balog’s attempt to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers by deploying time cameras around the Arctic; deserves to be seen for this mean feat alone.
West of Memphis
Famously produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, director Amy Berg’s documentary about the ‘West Memphis Three’s’ wrongful conviction for killing three boys not only informs the audience of these events, but aims to go beyond the duty of filmmaking to secure their release. Brave filmmaking that proves even more gripping than you first think – this documentary will make you feel lots of emotions.

After Earth gets a trailer
When I saw who was directing this film my heart sank. M. Night Shyamalan. Shiteman, sorry Shyamalan, has had a bad run with films. After the great 6th Sense and then Unbreakable his career has taken quite a nosedive in both making himself look more and more like a one trick pony when it comes to writing and then directing his own screenplays. That came to a head with either Lady in the Water or the critically, and commercially panned The Last Airbender.
So with trepidation I clicked play on the trailer and thought it was great. My mind was helped when I discovered he was only hired to tell the actors where to stand and how to say what was written. In other words - he's only the director and has had nothing to do with writing the film. This will, hopefully, mean that there won;t be some corny, crowbared, twist almost at the end of act 3!

With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. The making of Life Just Is
I've been following this film for quite a while so to discover there are two books coming out about the film piqued my interest. The first one is about making the film and the other is the script. This isn't the normal "here is the script" book but it also has the first draft so you can see how the film evolved from the first idea to what was actually filmed.
London, 13th December 2012 – To tie in with the release of the debut feature film LIFE JUST IS, the film's writer-director Alex Barrett will be publishing two books, available in both printed and digital versions. The books will be officially launched during a special event held at the Shortwave Cinema on Thursday 10th January 2013 at 18h30.
LIFE JUST IS: DIRECTOR'S JOURNAL
Graduating from a university film course in 2005 at the age of 21, Alex Barrett had an idea: he wanted to make a feature film. Flash forward seven years, and the idea has been realised as his debut feature LIFE JUST IS, nominated for the Michael Powell Award for Best British Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2012. But how did a young graduate with no industry connections manage to get a film made, sold and distributed? And why did the process take so long? And what was the toll it took?
LIFE JUST IS: DIRECTOR'S JOURNAL offers all these answers and more. Giving an unparalleled exploration of what it takes to get a debut microbudget film made, the journal presents a fascinating glimpse into the conception, development, production and postproduction of a film.
Alongside its insight into the development of a film, LIFE JUST IS: DIRECTOR'S JOURNAL also builds a vivid picture of the development of an individual. Edited as it is from seven years of daily entries, Barrett's passions and frustrations are laid bare in full, while his honest, open and engrossing journal entries are filled with anecdotes, musings, reviews and thoughts which slowly build into a coherent philosophy of film and of life.
Throughout the production of LIFE JUST IS, writer/director Alex Barrett has been documenting the process of the film's creation. In keeping with this open exploration of the making of the film, LIFE JUST IS:SCRIPTBOOK presents not only the final draft of the script, but also the first draft, thereby offering a unique insight into the film's development.
LIFE JUST IS tells the story of Pete, Tom, David, Claire and Jay, a tight-knit group of friends who share neighbouring flats in London after recently graduating from university. As they hang out, throw parties and navigate the new responsibilities of adult life, romantic tensions and existential crises begin to simmer beneath the surface.
ABOUT WRITER-DIRECTOR ALEX BARRETT
Alex Barrett is an independent filmmaker whose films collectively have been selected for over 50 international festivals, including such prestigious events as the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Hamburg International Short Film Festival, and the Tribeca Film Festival. In addition, his work has enjoyed a number of non-festival screenings, including showings at the BFI Southbank, Riverside Studios, Brixham Theatre and the Victoria & Albert museum. To date his films have garnered eight awards, including 'Best Lo-Budget Film' at the London Short Film Festival and 'Stoli Emerging Filmmaker Award' at the Babelgum Online Film Festival. His work has been described by the writer and broadcaster Sarfraz Manzoor as 'witty and profound', while Sight & Sound contributor Brad Stevens has called his first feature, LIFE JUST IS, 'one of the most promising debuts in contemporary cinema'. The feature was released in the UK in December 2012, after being nominated for the Michael Powell Award for Best British Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June 2012. www.alexbarrett.net.

Pacific Rim
Welcome to Transformers 4 - or possibly the one that Michael Bay should make! The trailer has it all. Not only does it have monsters but giant robots fighting them and lots of things being blown up!
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Jack gets a poster
The main poster has just hit my inbox earlier in the day. It's a lot different to the teaser poster that was released back in last December! Then the film had a release date in June but that has drifted slightly (by about 8 months to next march!).
The strange thing is that the poster doesn't have any of the cast listed... I'm not sure why as it has Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy, Ian McShane, to name but a few. SO they think that we have the director who gave us X-men is a bigger draw?

An ancient war is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack (Nicholas Hoult), into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom and its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend... and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Arnie's Last Stand?
With a trailer right out of the glory days of Arnie's explosive past, we get Kim Jee-Woon's US directorial debut. It has all you would come to expect for this sort of movie. Explosions, car chases and dreadful dialogue! So sit back and enjoy the trailer.
After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy.
With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow. Cortez’ path: straight through Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement, including Agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker) will have their final opportunity to intercept him before the violent fugitive slips across the border forever.
At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately rallies his team and takes the matter into his own hands, setting the stage for a classic showdown.

The Wicked Young Writers’ Award Winners
The Wicked Young Writers’ Award today announced its winners for 2012 at a prestigious ceremony at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, home of the award-winning musical Wicked. The ceremony was hosted by Louise Dearman, who stars as Elphaba, and prizes were presented by Michael Morpurgo, best-selling author of War Horse and Chair Judge of the Award. The Award’s judges, Michael McCabe, Executive Producer of Wicked, and Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust, also attended the ceremony. HRH The Duchess of Cornwall is Patron of the Award.
During the ceremony, performance poet Dean Atta led an interactive literacy workshop titled “My Wicked Poem”; prompted by the show’s theme of friendship, the audience of 100 shortlisted finalists and their guests created a brand new piece of creative writing in just 20mins.
In addition to performing musical numbers from the hit show, Wicked cast members also performed readings of the winning entries, revealed as: Catherine Solway, age 7 from Dorset, Darcey Fleming, age 10 from Southport, Jack McEwan, age 10 from Oxford, Aiden McConnell, age 13 from London, Sophie Max, age 14 from London, Scott Wilson, age 16 from Belfast and Jon Richardson, age 18 from Nottingham. The winning entries ranged from a poem about the environment inspired by bird-watching in Suffolk, a story about worms, moving stories about amnesia and loss, and an original retelling of the Peter Pan story.
The long-running West End show launched the Award in 2010 to recognise excellence in writing, encourage creativity and help develop writing talent in young people between 5 and 25 years of age from across all backgrounds and areas of the UK.
Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust commented on the winning entries, “All the winners this year inspired and excited us with their creative skills and their generous, moving and sophisticated views of the world. As they continue to develop their writing skills they will be a force for literature and literacy, because great writers not only create stories, they also create readers.”
Michael Morpurgo said of this year’s Award. “Great writing touches our hearts, awakens our intellect and leaves us thinking and dreaming. These young people have written extraordinary pieces that do all that. Here are the writers of the future.”
Wicked’s Executive Producer Michael McCabe said: “As a show, Wicked strives to draw upon the thrill of live performance to inspire discussion around its story and themes. It hugely rewarding to see so many young people across the country engage with these values through the Wicked Young Writers’ Award.”
Judges chose seven winners from almost 5000 entries from individuals and schools across the country, revealing a wide range of different voices and themes, with the spirit of the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee a clear inspiration for stories and poems in the younger age categories, along with stories about school and magical adventures. In the older age-categories the writing amongst teenagers generally skewed towards darker themes of fear, death and war, showing teenagers and young people testing the boundaries in terms of more self-conscious and psychological themes and confronting the reality of what they see around them. The shortlisted entrants in the 11-14 and 15-17 categories explored more complicated subjects, with genuine and deeply felt pieces on themes of disability, difference and morality. Amongst the entries there were powerful stories about mistaken identity, the immorality of the digital age, the consequences of murder, and amnesia.
The shortlisted finalist entries from the 5-17 year old age-categories have been published in an anthology celebrating the 2012 Wicked Young Writers’ Award. The shortlisted entries from the 18-25 year old age category have been published in an e-anthology downloadable from the Wicked Young Writers’ Award website.
The Wicked Young Writers’ Award has also been working with the National Literacy Trust on a programme of joint events at literary festivals and conferences to highlight both reading and writing skills amongst young people.

Shooting Leatherface
The first clip of the remake/re-imagined Texas Chainsaw Masacre has hit the web. It's not the best clip in the world to sell the film. With the odd "rude word" in it so you may not want to watch it at work or with small children about. If you like this sort of brain dead, spot the next one to die type of horror films then this seems to be the one for you.
Lionsgate’s TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.
Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars...
With gruesome surprises in store for a whole new generation, TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D stars Alexandra Daddario, Dan Yeager, Tremaine ‘Trey Songz’ Neverson, Scott Eastwood, Tania Raymonde, Shaun Sipos, Keram Malicki-Sanchez, James MacDonald, Thom Barry, Paul Rae and Richard Riehle, along with special appearances from four beloved cast members from previous installments of the franchise: Gunnar Hansen (the original Leatherface), Marilyn Burns, John Dugan and Bill Moseley. The film is directed by John Luessenhop (TAKERS), from a screenplay by Adam Marcus & Debra Sullivan and Kirsten Elms, based on a story by Stephen Susco and Adam Marcus & Debra Sullivan and based on characters created by Kim Henkel and Tobe Hooper, and produced by Carl Mazzocone. Lionsgate presents a Millennium Films production and Main Line Pictures production.
