Source Code new featurette and clip

Optimum has now released a new clip and a featurette to complement the clips and other things that were released a couple of days ago. The film does look very good. however, I feel that it's not going to be as good as his first film, Moon. Look at the clips and tell me what you think.

When decorated soldier Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown man, he discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. In an assignment unlike any he's ever known, he learns he's part of a government experiment called the 'Source Code,' a program that enables him to cross over into another man's identity in the last 8 minutes of his life. With a second, much larger target threatening to kill millions in downtown Chicago, Colter re-lives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is behind the bombs and prevent the next attack.

Filled with mind-boggling twists and heart-pounding suspense, Source Code is a smart action-thriller directed by Duncan Jones (Moon) also starring Michelle Monaghan (Eagle Eye, Due Date), Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, The Departed), and Jeffrey Wright (Quantum of Solace, Syriana).

Attack the Block¹ is a fast, funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing estate into a sci-fi playground. A tower block into a fortress under siege. And teenage street kids into heroes. It¹s inner city versus outer space.

Trainee nurse Sam is walking home to her flat in a scary South London tower block when she¹s robbed by a gang of masked, hooded youths. She¹s saved when the gang are distracted by a bright meteorite, which falls from the sky and hits a nearby parked car. Sam flees, just before the gang are attacked by a small alien creature that leaps from the wreckage. The gang chase the creature and kill it, dragging its ghoulish carcass to the top of the block, which they treat as their territory.

While Sam and the police hunt for the gang, a second wave of meteors fall.Confident of victory against such feeble invaders, the gang grab weapons, mount bikes and mopeds, and set out to defend their turf. But this time, the creatures are bigger. Much bigger. Savage, shadowy and bestial, they are hunting their fallen comrade and nothing will stand in their way. The estate is about to become a battleground. And the bunch of no-hope kids who just attacked Sam are about to become her, and the block¹s, only hope.

Sucker Punch, the European premiere

Yesterday saw the European premiere of the film in London’s Leicester Square. All the stars of the film were in attendance including the "visionary" director Zack Snyder

If you want to see some photos of the premiere then the nice nutters, sorry, people over at heyuguys went a bit "click happy" and have a ton of images.
Close your eyes. Open your mind. You will be unprepared.

“Sucker Punch” is an epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary.

She has been locked away against her will, but Babydoll (Emily Browning) has not lost her will to survive. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls—the outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), the street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), the fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) and the reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish)—to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm).

Led by Babydoll, the girls engage in fantastical warfare against everything from samurais to serpents, with a virtual arsenal at their disposal. Together, they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive. But with the help of a Wise Man (Scott Glenn), their unbelievable journey—if they succeed—will set them free.

Rio hits London

Pieces like this always start the same way. This is no different.

The stars were out for Sunday's screening of Rio. And that's about as far as I can get using the normal start cliché.

If anyone can tell me who the "stars" are in the pictures below I would be grateful. I would only list them as a set of the usual suspects who would go to an opening of an envelope if they could get their images in the press

RIO is a 3D motion picture event from Blue Sky Studios, the makers of the “Ice Age” films and one of the most successful producers of animated feature films in the world. The comedy-adventure centers on Blu, a rare macaw who leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota for the exotic wonders of Rio de Janeiro. But Blu’s new life and adventures in Rio are complicated by the fact that he can’t fly. Lucky for Blu, his new menagerie of friends are ready to help him find his inner-hero – and teach him what it really means to soar.

Harry Potter gets a bigger synopsis

After the release of the poster a couple of days ago, Warner Bros has now released a new, fuller, synopsis to go with the film.
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2," is the final adventure in the Harry Potter film series. The much-anticipated motion picture event is the second of two full-length parts.

In the epic finale, the battle between the good and evil forces of the wizarding world escalates into an all-out war. The stakes have never been higher and no one is safe. But it is Harry Potter who may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice as he draws closer to the climactic showdown with Lord Voldemort.

It all ends here.

Training the Sucker Punch Girls

You know a film is close to release by the amount of stuff that hits my in-box. This one is no exception with a "Meet the girls" featurette that just came in as well as this one that shows how much work the cast did to get in shape for the shoot.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Bimbos on a poster?

Disney has just released a new poster for the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.  This time it shows a couple of bimbos on a rock.  Sorry, some mermaids waiting to cause chaos...

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise—this time in Disney Digital 3D™. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise. When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

The international cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa, and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid. In theaters Memorial Day weekend, 2011.

The Three Musketeers fighting back into cinemas

Entertainment One has just sent over the first images and trailer for Paul W.S. Anderson's version of The Three Musketeers. From the trailer it seems a touch more serious than the Oliver Reed & Richard Chamberlain version that I remember the most.

To watch this video, you need the latest Flash-Player and active javascript in your browser.

The hot-headed young D'Artagnan, along with three former legendary but now down on their luck Musketeers, must unite and defeat a beautiful double agent and her villainous employer from seizing the French throne and engulfing Europe in war.
The famous swashbucklers return to cinema screens October 14, 2011 in 3D.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS - The X-jet appears

I've just found a new image for X-Men: First Class that shows the Blackbird, aka X-Jet, during wind tunnel tests.  I'm not sure who is having the picnic but I'm sure someone will tell me.

X-MEN FIRST CLASS charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

Hannah gets a featurette

After the release of the trailer and some images. The nice people over at Universal have now sent over a great featurette that shows even more action and some more of the plot.

Hanna (played by Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan of Atonement, also directed by Joe Wright) is 16 years old. She is bright, inquisitive, and a devoted daughter. Uniquely, she has the strength, the stamina, and the smarts of a solider; these come from being raised by her widowed father Erik (Eric Bana), an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of North Finland. Erik has taught Hanna to hunt, put her through extreme self-defense workouts, and home-schooled her with only an encyclopedia and a book of fairy tales. Hanna has been living a life unlike any other teenager; her upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. But out in the world there is unfinished business for Hanna’s family, and it is with a combination of pride and apprehension that Erik realizes his daughter can no longer be held back.

This turning point in Hanna’s adolescence is a sharp one; she is separated from Erik and embarks on the mission that she was always destined for. Before she and her father can reunite as planned in Berlin, Hanna is captured by agents dispatched by ruthless intelligence operative Marissa Wiegler (Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett). Marissa, a career agent, has long been harboring secrets that tie her to Hanna and Erik.

Detained for observation and held beneath the Moroccan desert, Hanna soon turns the tables on her captors. Her daring escape to above-ground thrusts her into an unfamiliar landscape and world which she must quickly learn to comprehend and navigate. Marissa secretly sends a team of agents after Hanna, and joins the deadly pursuit herself. As Hanna journeys across Europe and nears her ultimate target, she faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.

Jameson Empire Awards 2011

Just as I though that the award season was over another one appears. This time it's the Jameson Empire Awards. I was going to put a featurette up but youTube didn't like me at the time.

It was an outstanding evening on Sunday 27th March as the film industry’s biggest and most respected stars turned out to celebrate the Jameson Empire Awards 2011. The awards, which were again hosted by comedian Dara O Briain and took place at the Grosvenor House Hotel, were honoured with the presence of such leading names from the world of cinema as Anna Kendrick, Talulah Riley, Lasse Hallström, Jonathan Ross, The Inbetweeners, Sarah Harding, Jessica Hynes, Noel Clarke, Kate Magowan, Neil Marshall and Joanne Froggatt, amongst others.

This year, the Awards were evenly distributed across the nominated films, with Inception, last summer’s movie phenomenon, carrying off the top prize for Best Film (presented by Kirin Ichiban). The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the first film from the Stieg Larsson trilogy, won two Awards for Best Thriller and Best Actress (presented by Citroën) for Noomi Rapace, whilst Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass also walked away with two Awards for Best British Film (presented by The Industry Trust) and Best Newcomer (presented by aqua) for Chloe Moretz for her controversial role as Hit-Girl. Accepting the trophies for Kick-Ass were screenwriter Jane Goldman with cast members Mark Strong, Dexter Fletcher and Jason Flemyng.

For his multiple award-winning performance as King George VI in The King’s Speech, Colin Firth was honoured with this year’s Jameson Best Actor Award, presented to him by Olivia Williams. The award for Best Director (presented by Sony) went to Edgar Wright, for his immensely popular Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Sponsors Jameson Irish Whiskey and Empire magazine were delighted to acknowledge and honour one of Britain’s most exceptional actors for his phenomenal body of work. From films such as Sid and Nancy, Prick Up Your Ears and Leon to his recent work in the blockbuster Harry Potter and Batman film franchises, Gary Oldman was bestowed the Empire Icon, which was presented to him by his Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy co-star Colin Firth.

In addition, special honours were bestowed on two of Britain’s most in-demand and highly respected young talents. For her overall contribution to cinema through a wide array of memorable roles, Keira Knightley took home the Empire Hero Award (presented by Jameson Irish Whiskey), which was presented to her by her friend and Atonement co-star, James McAvoy. Award-winning writer-director Edgar Wright was awarded this year’s Empire Inspiration (presented by HMV).

Meanwhile, horror fans will be pleased that The Last Exorcism beat off competition to win Best Horror, with the film’s producer, Eli Roth, at the ceremony to collect the award, whilst the ethereal Lily Cole presented Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy to actor Tom Felton for the box office record-breaking penultimate film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

Dark British humour was the champion in comedy this year with the BAFTA Award-winning Four Lions voted as Best Comedy. Presented by Dermot O’Leary, the cast and producers accepted the award on behalf of filmmaker Christopher Morris.

This year, Empire readers have flooded the popular amateur filmmaking award Done In 60 Seconds with their entries and the finalists include fantastic one-minute reprisals of films such as Avatar. However, there can only be one winner, and Jameson and Empire were delighted to give Maeve Stram the Award for her wonderful adaptation of 127 Hours, which was presented to her by two of the judges, Chris O’Dowd & Neil Marshall.

Mark Dinning, Empire’s Editor, said: “For movies, the past year has without a doubt been the most interesting in what feels like forever. Where previous years have seen sequels and spin-offs dominate, the past 12 months have seen originality and style reign supreme. And I’m very proud that Empire’s 1.5 million readers have recognised and applauded that with their votes this year quite rightly rewarding the likes of Inception, Kick-Ass and The King’s Speech – sensational movies that have set new boundaries for filmmakers the world over. I am also delighted that this year we have been able to award the incredible Keira Knightley, Edgar Wright and Gary Oldman with special awards. All are British, all are brilliant.”

My Soul To Take DVD Review

I have awarded this film 2 stars. This is a Wes Craven film, and that does become obvious pretty quickly. It has all the hallmarks of his recent work (Scream, mostly) and feels more than anything like a long lost member of the Scream franchise.

Although this is an 18 certificate it seems to be more of a psychological thriller than an actual horror film, and unfortunately it does fall down somewhat in this, due to it making very little sense in quite a number of places. There are holes in the plot that you could drive a bus through, and that makes it difficult to get into the story properly.

There is nothing here to tempt die hard horror fans, no real blood and guts, and no real action scenes either. It is essentially a teen horror flick, rather disappointing for an 18 certificate film, since by the time you are old enough to watch it you have gone past the age where you would have been interested in it!

It does however have a few plus points. In spite of a rather clunky and confusing script the acting is, surprisingly, very good, with excellent performances by Max Thierot who plays Bug (Jumper, Chloe), John Magaro who plays Alex and Emily Meade as Fang.

There are several special features included on the disc; Deleted and Extended Scenes (all of which are apparent why they were cut in the first place), Alternative Opening and Endings, Audio Commentary and Trailer.

In summary, this is not one for serious horror fans, but there will be plenty of fans of formulaic teen horror who will love it, and appreciate it for what it is.

My Soul To Take is available on DVD and Blu-ray from 4 April 2011
